Connecting over a Cup of Chai

When it comes to a word that unites us in India (along with Cricket of course!), I believe it’s Chai. Long winded conversations over anything that matters or even if it doesn’t is often done with cups of tea in India! From business deals to politics, failed relationships or the start of a new one and banter about why one movie is better than the rest are all done over the humble cup of Chai.

Grown across the varied landscape of India, a cup of tea doesn’t just unite the people, it creates an atmosphere of happiness and a sense of relief too. In India, if we ask someone what they would like to drink, rather than opting for water or juice, they usually choose a cup of Chai.

Chai in India is not just a drink that we offer to someone when they come to our homes, it’s an emotion that we present to our guests. When our mothers make chai, it has the essence of love sprinkled with probably cinnamon, cardamom and maybe even masala!

In the rural areas across India people often take time out to gather and talk over cups of tea. It’s hard to imagine why in sweltering heat why do most people drink tea. The ties with Chai in India are more than skin deep and are often seen as a valuable heritage to cherish and pass on.

Tea leaves just don’t create an aroma, they ignite the senses and often bring back memories. A nostalgic trip in a warm cup!

A person doesn’t necessarily need to be a chai lover, everyone in India usually consumes this beloved drink at least once in their lifetime. The inviting smell of tea leaves wafts the millions of homes across the vast lands of India. The next time you travel to India be sure to try the variations found across the country.
